Rhode Island Client Certification-Pro HAC Vice is a process by which an attorney admitted practicing in a jurisdiction other than Rhode Island may seek an order from the Supreme Court of Rhode Island allowing them to represent a client in a particular case. The Pro HAC Vice application must be supported by a Rhode Island Client Certification, which is a document signed by the client that certifies that the client understands the attorney is not admitted to practice law in Rhode Island and that the client is aware of the potential risks of hiring an out-of-state attorney. There are two types of Rhode Island Client Certification-Pro HAC Vice: Limited Pro HAC Vice and General Pro HAC Vice. Limited Pro HAC Vice allows an out-of-state attorney to represent a client in a particular case, while General Pro HAC Vice grants an out-of-state attorney permission to practice in Rhode Island more generally without having to reapply each time they represent a client in a case.
