South Carolina ESCAPE (Expedition Science and Community Engagement Program) is a hands-on, outdoor learning experience for South Carolina students designed to foster environmental stewardship, scientific inquiry, and community engagement. It is a program of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SC DNR). South Carolina ESCAPE consists of three types of experiences: field trips, overnight expeditions, and in-classroom activities. Field trips are outdoor day-long adventures to SC DNR sites where students participate in activities related to the natural resources of South Carolina. Overnight expeditions are multi-day outdoor experiences in which students explore the natural resources of the state and participate in service-learning projects to help protect and conserve the environment. In-classroom activities are designed to help teachers integrate SC DNR content into their existing curriculum. SC DNR staff, volunteers, and local natural resource experts guide students through all South Carolina ESCAPE experiences. Participants learn about the natural history of South Carolina, explore the coastal and maritime habitats of the state, investigate conservation challenges, and develop strategies to protect the environment.
