The South Carolina Order of Appointment of Qualified Interpreter (SCO QI) is a document issued by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DEC) that certifies interpreters who have met the state’s minimum qualifications for providing interpretation services in South Carolina. This document is necessary for interpreters to be allowed to interpret in medical and legal settings in the state. The SCO QI is divided into three categories: Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3. Level 1 interpreters are certified to interpret in healthcare settings and do not require certification in a foreign language. Level 2 interpreters have the additional requirement of being certified in a foreign language, such as Spanish, Korean, or Vietnamese. Level 3 interpreters are certified to interpret in legal settings and additionally require certification in a foreign language. To receive the SCO QI, interpreters must complete an online application, submit proof of their certifications, and pass a written exam.
