The South Carolina Vulnerable Adult GAL Certificate is a training program offered by the South Carolina Supreme Court to train court-appointed guardians ad item (Gals) who specialize in representing the interests of vulnerable adults in court proceedings. The purpose of the training is to help Gals better understand the legal rights of vulnerable adults and to provide them with the tools they need to effectively protect their clients. The South Carolina Vulnerable Adult GAL Certificate program is divided into three levels: Level One, Level Two, and Level Three. Level One is for those Gals who have not previously taken the South Carolina Vulnerable Adult GAL Certificate training. This level covers the basics of guardianship law, the duties of a GAL, and the ethical considerations of representing vulnerable adults. Level Two is for Gals who have already completed the Level One training, and focuses on more complex legal issues and the nuances of representing vulnerable adults in court. Level Three is for Gals who have already completed Levels One and Two, and focuses on the advanced topics of guardianship law. In order to be certified as a South Carolina Vulnerable Adult GAL, Gals must complete all three levels of the South Carolina Vulnerable Adult GAL Certificate program. Upon completion of the program, Gals will receive a certificate of completion, which they can then present to the court as proof of their training and expertise in the area of guardianship law.
