The South Dakota Application for Furlough from 24-7 Program and Order (also known as the "Furlough Program") is a program that allows South Dakota inmates to be temporarily released from a 24-hour, 7-day a week secure facility. This program is designed to provide inmates with supervised release while still being monitored and supervised by state corrections' personnel. It is also intended to provide inmates with the opportunity to address personal, family, social, educational, and vocational needs in the community. The Furlough Program is available for inmates who meet certain criteria. Inmates must be serving an adult sentence of confinement in a South Dakota Department of Corrections facility and must be in good standing in the facility. Inmates must also be recommended by the facility warden and have an approved and signed Furlough Plan. There are two types of South Dakota Applications for Furlough from 24-7 Program and Order: Work Furlough and Non-Work Furlough. Work Furlough is granted to inmates who have obtained employment in the community or who have a job offer. Non-Work Furlough is granted to inmates who are seeking to participate in a community-based program such as an educational program, drug or alcohol treatment program, or other approved activity. Inmates who are granted furlough must abide by the terms of the Furlough Plan, which includes reporting to a designated field supervisor at designated times, submitting to drug and alcohol testing, and attending other activities specified in the Plan. In addition, inmates must adhere to all rules and regulations of the facility from which they are released.
