The Tennessee Request for State Identification Firearm Card, also known as a HCP or Handgun Carry Permit, is a document issued by the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security that allows an individual to possess, carry, and transport firearms. The card is valid for four years, and must be renewed prior to the expiration date. The card is required for the possession of a handgun in Tennessee. There are three types of Tennessee Request for State Identification Firearm Card: the Regular Handgun Carry Permit, the Enhanced Handgun Carry Permit, and the Limited Handgun Carry Permit. The Regular Handgun Carry Permit is for individuals over the age of 21, and allows the bearer to carry a handgun openly or concealed. The Enhanced Handgun Carry Permit is an add-on to the Regular Handgun Carry Permit and enables the bearer to carry a handgun in additional areas, such as state parks and restaurants. The Enhanced Handgun Carry Permit can only be obtained by individuals over the age of 21 who have completed an additional training course. Lastly, the Limited Handgun Carry Permit is for individuals over the age of 18, and allows the bearer to carry a handgun openly or concealed in specific places, such as a place of employment.
