Tennessee Medical Record Certification is a certification program offered by the Tennessee Department of Health that verifies a person's knowledge and ability to perform medical record clerical and coding functions. It is designed to promote quality and accuracy in the collection, storage, processing, and release of medical information. This certification is available to individuals who have completed an approved medical record technology program and who have passed the required examinations. There are two types of Tennessee Medical Record Certification: Certified Medical Record Technician (CART) and Certified Medical Record Coder (CRC). The CART exam tests an individual's knowledge of medical terminology, filing and retrieval, health care delivery systems, and medical coding. The CRC exam tests an individual's knowledge of medical coding, ICD-10 coding, CPT coding, and HOPES coding.
