Insanity is a form of mental illness in which a person loses contact with reality, usually through delusions, hallucinations, or other disturbances in cognition. It can manifest itself in a variety of ways, from minor cognitive distortions to complete psychosis. There are several types of insanity, including organic insanity (caused by a physical condition such as a brain injury or stroke), functional insanity (caused by a psychological disorder such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder), and legal insanity (when a person is found not guilty of a crime due to mental illness). The most common symptoms of insanity include disorganization of thought, disorientation, hallucinations, delusions, disordered behavior, and impaired judgment. Treatment for insanity usually includes a combination of psychotherapy, medication, and hospitalization.
