Certification for Law Student Representation is a type of certification that is awarded to qualified attorneys who have satisfied the educational and experience requirements to represent law students. This certification is offered by the American Bar Association (ABA) and is required for attorneys who want to practice in certain areas of law such as education law, family law, bankruptcy law, and immigration law. There are two types of Certification for Law Student Representation: the National Certification in Law Student Representation and the State Certification in Law Student Representation. The National Certification requires an attorney to have completed a minimum of 30 hours of continuing legal education (CLE) in subjects related to law student representation, legal research, and writing. The State Certification requires an attorney to have completed a minimum of 45 hours of CLE in the same areas as the National Certification. For both certifications, attorneys are required to pass a written exam and complete an extensive background check before being certified.
