2.1 FOOD STAMPS-UNAUTHORIZED USE / 7 U.S.C. Sec. 2024(b, is a federal criminal statute that makes it unlawful for any person to use, transfer, acquire, alter, or possess food stamps which were not issued to that person, or which are issued to another person. This section of the law prohibits the unauthorized use of food stamps, including buying, selling, trading, or using counterfeit food stamps. It also prohibits the use of food stamps for illegal activities, such as drug trafficking, and the use of food stamps in any manner other than that for which they were intended. There are three types of violations under this statute: receiving food stamps in exchange for a consideration (such as cash or drugs); using food stamps for purposes other than those intended (such as buying alcohol); and transferring food stamps to another person who is not eligible to receive them. Violations of this statute are punishable by up to five years in prison, a fine or both.
