2.43 UNLAWFUL SALE OR DISPOSITION OF FIREARM / 18 U.S.C. Sec. 922(d) is a federal law that prohibits the sale or transfer of firearms to certain categories of people. Specifically, it prohibits the sale or transfer of firearms to people who are: 1) under indictment for, or have been convicted of, a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year; 2) fugitives from justice; 3) users of illegal drugs; 4) persons adjudicated as mentally defective or committed to a mental institution; 5) illegal aliens; 6) persons dishonorably discharged from the military; 7) persons subject to a court order restraining them from harassing, stalking or threatening an intimate partner or child; 8) persons convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence; and 9) persons who have renounced their US citizenship. Violations of this law can result in fines and/or imprisonment.
