2.70 [Robbery] [Extortion] by Force, Violence or Fear / 18 U.S.C. Sec. 1951(a) (Hobbs Act) is a federal crime under the U.S. Code as defined by the Hobbs Act. This law prohibits individuals from using force, violence, or fear to obtain property from another person or entity. This crime is often referred to as robbery or extortion. The Hobbs Act defines two types of 2.70 [Robbery] [Extortion] by Force, Violence or Fear / 18 U.S.C. Sec. 1951(a) (Hobbs Act): (1) "robbery" and (2) "extortion". Robbery is defined as the taking of property from another person or entity through the use of force, violence, or fear. Extortion is defined as the obtaining of property from another person or entity through the use of threats, force, violence, or fear.
