Controlled Substances: Possession on Vessel of the United States or Subject to the Jurisdiction of the United States is a body of law that pertains to the possession of certain substances on vessels of the United States or vessels subject to the jurisdiction of the United States. Controlled substances are drugs, chemicals, or other substances regulated by the federal government due to their potential for abuse and/or harm. Examples of controlled substances include opioids, stimulants, depressants, hallucinogens, and anabolic steroids. There are two types of Controlled Substances: Possession on Vessel of the United States or Subject to the Jurisdiction of the United States: criminal possession and civil forfeiture. Criminal possession is a violation of federal or state law that can result in fines, jail time, or other penalties. Civil forfeiture is the government’s seizure of property, such as vessels, cars, or money, when it is determined that the property was used to facilitate a violation of drug laws.
