18 U.S.C. Sec. 1029(A)(7) is a federal law that prohibits the use, production, trafficking or possession of modified telecommunications instruments. These modified instruments are devices, equipment, or hardware that have been altered, modified, or adapted so that they can be used to illegally access, intercept, or modify the transmission of any telecommunications service. This law applies to both individuals and businesses, as well as any organization or person who acts as an intermediary in the process of acquiring or using such instruments. There are several types of modified telecommunications instruments that are prohibited under this law. These include devices that have been altered to allow for unauthorized access to telecommunications networks, such as telephone systems or networks, as well as devices that have been modified to allow for the interception of communications on the same networks. Additionally, devices that have been modified to allow for the modification of data or other information on the telecommunications networks are also prohibited. Finally, any devices that have been altered or modified to allow for the transmission of false or misleading messages or signals on telecommunications networks are also prohibited.
