8.112 Killing or Attempting to Kill Federal Officer or Employee (18 U.S.C. Sec. 1114) is a federal law that prohibits any person from willfully killing, or attempting to kill, any officer or employee of the United States, or any of its agencies. This law applies to any federal employee or officer, regardless of whether they are on or off-duty, and applies to the president, vice president, and any officer or employee of the United States. The penalty for violation of this law is a fine and/or imprisonment of not more than twenty years. There are two distinct types of 8.112 Killing or Attempting to Kill Federal Officer or Employee (18 U.S.C. Sec. 1114): attempted murder and actual murder. Attempted murder occurs when a person attempts to kill a federal officer or employee, but fails. Actual murder occurs when a person successfully kills a federal officer or employee. Both attempted murder and actual murder are serious crimes and are punishable by fines and/or imprisonment of up to twenty years.
