Virginia Restricted Driver's License Authorization (DC-271) — Failure to pay fines and costs is a document issued by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to individuals who are unable to pay fines or court costs associated with a traffic violation. The DMV will issue this authorization to individuals who have had their license suspended due to their inability to pay the fines or costs. This authorization will allow the individual to drive to and from work, school, and necessary medical appointments. It does not, however, allow for the operation of a commercial vehicle. There are two types of Virginia Restricted Driver's License Authorization (DC-271) — Failure to pay fines and costs: 1) Temporary Restricted Driver's License Authorization and 2) Full Restricted Driver's License Authorization. The Temporary Restricted Driver's License Authorization is valid for up to 90 days, and requires the individual to pay the full fines and costs within that time period. The Full Restricted Driver's License Authorization is valid for up to one year, and requires the individual to pay a portion of the fines and costs each month until the entire amount is paid in full.
