Vermont Deferred Sentence & Probation Order is a program that allows individuals facing criminal charges to have their sentence deferred in exchange for completing certain requirements. This program allows individuals to receive a period of probationary supervision and conditions instead of a conviction and potentially a jail sentence. The program is administered by the Probation and Parole Department of the Vermont Department of Corrections. There are two types of Vermont Deferred Sentence & Probation Order- pre-plan and post-plea. Pre-plan Deferred Sentence & Probation Order is available to individuals before they plead guilty to the charge. Post-plea Deferred Sentence & Probation Order is available to individuals after they have pled guilty to the charge. In both cases, individuals will be required to meet certain conditions (such as attending counseling or completing community service) and may be subject to random drug and alcohol testing. The program is designed to provide individuals with an opportunity to avoid a criminal conviction while still being held accountable for their actions.
