Vermont Citation to Juvenile is a form of non-judicial court process created to hold juvenile offenders accountable for their actions while avoiding the stigma of a court trial. The Citation to Juvenile is used to address minor offenses such as underage drinking, possession of marijuana, and minor property damage. It is an alternative to the court process, allowing the offender to accept responsibility for their actions and receive sanctions that are tailored to their individual situation. The Citation to Juvenile process is administered by local law enforcement. There are three types of Vermont Citation to Juveniles: Juvenile Citation, Youth Restorative Citation, and Youth Accountability Citation. The Juvenile Citation is the most common form and is used for minor offenses such as underage drinking, possession of marijuana, and minor property damage. The Youth Restorative Citation is used to address more serious offenses such as drug possession, shoplifting, and vandalism. The Youth Accountability Citation is used for more serious offenses such as assault, sexual assault, and burglary.
