Vermont Complaint for Establishment of Parentage is a legal document used to determine the paternity of a child when the parents are not married. It is also known as a parentage action or paternity suit, and can be used by either the mother or the father of the child to establish the parental relationship. The complaint is initiated by filing the document with the family division of the Vermont Superior Court. There are two types of Vermont Complaint for Establishment of Parentage: a Voluntary Acknowledgment of Parentage (VAP) and an Administrative Order of Paternity (AOP). In a VAP, both parents sign a document acknowledging that they are the legal parents of the child, while in an AOP, the court orders that one person is the legal parent of the child without the parents’ consent. The complaint also includes information such as the name of the child, the date of birth, the names of the parents, and the address of the court. If the court finds that the parentage has been established, an Order of Foliation will be issued.
