The Washington Declaration Regarding Payments (also known as the Washington Declaration) is an international agreement signed by countries in the World Bank Group in April 2018 in Washington, D.C. The Washington Declaration commits countries to strive for universal access to financial services, promote financial inclusion, and provide the necessary enabling environment for the rapid and sustainable expansion of the digital economy. The Washington Declaration also sets out a number of principles and commitments on payments, including the promotion of innovative payments solutions, consumer protection, financial stability, data privacy, and the development of a sound legal and regulatory framework. The Washington Declaration is composed of two main parts: the Principles and the Commitments. The Principles outline the main objectives and commitments, and the Commitments set out specific actions that countries should take to achieve the objectives of the Washington Declaration. The Washington Declaration is an important step in the development of a global payments' infrastructure that is secure, reliable, and efficient.
