The Washington Memorandum of Understanding for Gals (FAMOUS) is an agreement between the Washington State Office of Public Defense, Washington State Department of Social and Health Services, and a guardian ad item (GAL) program to ensure that Gals in the state are properly trained, supervised, and funded. The FAMOUS outlines the roles and responsibilities of each party, as well as the qualifications and standards a GAL must meet in order to be appointed to a case. The FAMOUS defines two types of Gals: (1) those appointed by the court or another agency to represent the best interests of a child or other vulnerable person in a legal case, and (2) those appointed by the court or another agency to represent the best interests of a disabled adult in a legal case. Both types of Gals must meet the same basic qualifications, such as having experience in the relevant field, being of good character, and having a knowledge of relevant laws and procedures. The FAMOUS also outlines the training and supervision requirements for Gals, including both initial and continuing education. It also outlines the funding requirements, which are intended to ensure that Gals are adequately compensated for their work. Finally, the FAMOUS outlines the reporting requirements, which are intended to ensure that Gals are held accountable for their actions and that their performance is monitored.
