Washington Order for TASK Referral is a court-ordered referral to an agency that provides services to individuals struggling with drugs, alcohol, and/or mental health issues. The Washington State Department of Corrections (DOC) and the state’s Department of Social and Health Services (DSS) use the TASK referral system to identify and refer individuals for treatment services. Washington Order for TASK Referral is designed to reduce recidivism and improve public safety by linking individuals with substance use and/or mental health disorders to appropriate treatment services, thereby increasing the likelihood of successful reintegration into the community. There are three types of Washington Order for TASK Referral: Pre-Sentence, Post-Sentence, and Post-Release. Pre-Sentence referrals are made prior to sentencing and are intended to provide the court with information about the defendant’s needs and ability to benefit from treatment services. Post-Sentence referrals are made after sentencing and are intended to provide the court with information about the defendant’s progress in treatment and how treatment has impacted their behavior. Post-Release referrals are made after release from incarceration and are intended to help link individuals to appropriate community-based treatment services.
