Washington Return of Service (ROS) is a legal document that is used to notify a party of a legal action against them. It is used in the state of Washington, and is also sometimes referred to as a Notice of Summons. The document must be served to the other party in a legal action in order for the legal process to proceed. There are two types of Washington Return of Service: Personal Service and Substitute Service. Personal Service requires that the document is delivered directly to the other party by a third party. Substitute Service allows for the document to be delivered to someone else, such as an adult in the same house as the party being served, or to the party's place of business. Washington Return of Service must include the name of the party being served, the name of the person or entity filing the legal action, the date of service, an explanation of how the document was served, and the signature of the person who served the document.
