A person desiring to change their name may file an action in the District Court of their residence. Petitions are available in the District Court Administration Office and below. Filing Fees: Filing fees are due at the time of filing and are non-refundable.

Fees. Name change fees are $58.50 plus $203.50 auditor recording fee. As part of the filing fee you will be provide three certified copies of the name change order. Each additional copy is $5.

You will need to contact the District Court in the county where you reside in order to obtain the needed forms. Contact information for all County Courts is available in the Washington Court Directory. Name Change fees vary depending upon the county and possibly on the number of persons named on the Petition.

Washington state law does not impose a time limit after the wedding by which a name change must be accomplished. However, if you are making the change more than a year after your wedding, check with each agency to determine if a certified copy of your marriage license will suffice to change your name with them.

There is no legal requirement for either party in a marriage to change their name once married. If you do decide to change your name, there is no centralized process or agency that will change or update your name for all agencies. To assume a new last name, you must contact each agency individually.
