Washington Sealed Personal Health Care Records (also known as Washington state's medical privacy laws) are a set of laws and regulations that protect the privacy of individuals' health care information. The records are sealed and protected from unauthorized disclosure by the Washington State Department of Health. Washington's sealed personal health care records include a variety of information related to an individual's medical history, treatments, and other medical data. This includes medical records such as the results of tests, diagnostic images, prescriptions, lab reports, and more. The records also include information related to an individual's financial information, such as billing information and insurance claims. The Washington Sealed Personal Health Care Records laws were enacted in 2020, and the state has since implemented additional regulations to ensure the appropriate release of medical records. There are four main types of Washington Sealed Personal Health Care Records: mandatory disclosure records, discretionary disclosure records, limited disclosure records, and restricted disclosure records. Mandatory disclosure records are those that must be released when requested, discretionary disclosure records are those that can be released at the discretion of the health care provider, limited disclosure records are those that must be released under certain limited circumstances, and restricted disclosure records are those that can only be released with the approval of the individual.
