Washington Order is a type of court order that is issued to protect victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. It is a civil court order that is issued by a judge and requires the abuser to stay away from the victim and not contact them in any way. The order may also include other provisions such as prohibiting the abuser from owning firearms, attending or living near the victim’s home, attending their school, or attending their place of work. There are three types of Washington Orders: Emergency Protection Order (EPO), Domestic Violence Protection Order (DVP), and Sexual Assault Protection Order (SAP). EPOS are issued when the victim is in immediate danger and can be issued without notice to the abuser. They are valid for 14 days and are typically granted on an ex parte basis. DVP Os are issued to protect victims of domestic violence and are valid for up to one year and can be renewed. Capos are issued to protect victims of sexual assault and are valid for up to two years and can be renewed.
