A Washington Order For Protection (WOP) is a legal order issued by a court in the state of Washington that protects a person from abuse or harassment by another person. It can be requested by a person who is being threatened, harassed, stalked, assaulted, or otherwise harmed by another person. WOPS are issued to prevent further contact between the two people and can include orders staying away from the person or property, not to contact the person in any way, or to turn in firearms or other weapons. There are two types of WOPS: temporary orders and permanent orders. Temporary orders are issued when there is an immediate threat of harm or when a person has been the victim of domestic violence or stalking. These orders last for up to 14 days. Permanent orders are issued when the court finds that there is a need for long-term protection and are usually granted for a period of one year.
