The Washington Statement is a document issued in 2020 by the Office of the United States Trade Representative to outline the U.S. government’s commitment to advancing technology-based digital trade. It sets out three principles that the U.S. government believes should underpin international digital trade: opening markets for digital trade, fairness and non-discrimination, and digital trust and security. The Washington Statement also encourages governments to work together to reduce barriers to digital trade, including tariffs, unnecessary regulation, and data localization requirements. There are two types of Washington Statement: the Statement of Digital Trade Principles and the Statement of Digital Trade Objectives. The Statement of Digital Trade Principles provides a framework for governments to work together to promote digital trade, while the Statement of Digital Trade Objectives outlines key objectives to be achieved in order to promote digital trade.
