Washington Return of Service (ROSS) is a legal process used in the state of Washington to serve court documents on defendants in civil cases. It is typically used when a defendant cannot be personally served with court documents. Washington Return of Service is also known as Waivers of Service and Summons. There are three types of Washington Returns of Service. The first is a Waiver of Service of Summons, which is a document signed by the defendant voluntarily agreeing to accept service of the court documents. This waives the defendant’s right to be personally served with the documents. The second type of Washington Return of Service is a Mailing Return of Service. This is a document signed by the defendant agreeing to accept service of the documents via mail. The third type of Washington Return of Service is a Publication Return of Service. This is a document signed by the defendant agreeing to accept service of the documents via publication in a newspaper or other public medium. This is typically done when a defendant cannot be found or is out of state.
