The Washington Declaration Re Service Members Civil Relief Act (SCRA) is a federal law that provides legal protections for service members and their families during deployment and active duty. The SCRA helps protect members of the military from being taken advantage of by creditors and landlords while they are away from home serving their country. It also helps them maintain financial stability and protect their legal rights. The SCRA provides service members with a wide range of protections, including: -Limiting or suspending interest accrual on debt incurred prior to active duty -Protecting the rights of service members with regard to leases, mortgages, and other contracts -Prohibiting creditors from foreclosing on a service member’s home or repossessing their vehicle -Providing service members with the right to terminate certain types of contracts -Protecting service members from being sued or held in contempt of court while on active duty The SCRA covers all members of the United States military, including members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard, and Reserves. It also applies to their families. There are three main types of the Washington Declaration Re Service Members Civil Relief Act: 1. The Interest Rate Reduction Program, which helps reduce the interest rates on debts incurred prior to active duty; 2. The Lease Protection Program, which helps protect the rights of service members with regard to leases, mortgages, and other contracts; and 3. The Foreclosure and Repossession Protection Program, which prohibits creditors from foreclosing on a service member’s home or repossessing their vehicle.
