Washington Order to Allow Service by Mail, also known as service by publication, is an option for serving court papers on a party who cannot be located or served personally. It is authorized by the Washington Rules of Civil Procedure, which provide that an order for service by mail may be granted when a party cannot be found and served by personal service. The order must be requested by an affidavit. The order will direct the plaintiff to publish notice in a newspaper of general circulation in the county where the action is pending. The notice must include a brief description of the action, the name of the court where the action is pending, the name of the party to be served, the name of the plaintiff, and a statement that the party must appear and respond to the action within a certain period of time or a default judgment may be entered against them. The order must also include a statement that a copy of the summons and complaint must be mailed to the party's last known address. There are two types of Washington Order to Allow Service by Mail: service by publication and service by mailing.
