The Washington Declaration of Service (WDS) is an initiative created by former President Barack Obama in 2009. It is a pledge to volunteer and serve the nation, state or local community. It serves as a reminder to individuals, organizations, and businesses of the importance of giving back and the impact that service has on our country. The WDS includes five different types of declaration: the National Volunteer Declaration, the State Volunteer Declaration, the Local Volunteer Declaration, the Business Volunteer Declaration, and the Student Volunteer Declaration. The National Volunteer Declaration is an opportunity for individuals to pledge their time to volunteer and serve the nation. The State Volunteer Declaration is a pledge to serve the state and community. The Local Volunteer Declaration is a commitment to serve at the local level, and the Business Volunteer Declaration is a commitment to corporate social responsibility and employee engagement in volunteer initiatives. Finally, the Student Volunteer Declaration is an opportunity for students to pledge their commitment to service and leadership in their local communities.
