Washington Sexual Assault Protection Orders (Wasps) are court orders issued by a judge to protect a person from stalking, harassment, and sexual assault. Wasps can be issued ex parte (without the other party being present) or after a hearing. The order can require the abuser to stay away from the protected person, their home, workplace, school, or other specified locations. It can also contain other provisions such as prohibiting contact, surrendering of firearms and ammunition, and attending counseling or treatment. Wasps can be issued for up to two years and can be renewed. There are two types of Wasps: Domestic Violence Protection Orders and Sexual Assault Protection Orders. Domestic Violence Protection Orders are issued when a person has been the victim of domestic violence or stalking. Sexual Assault Protection Orders are issued when a person has been the victim of sexual assault or stalking.
