Washington Instructions for Sexual Assault Protection Order (WISP) is a legal order issued by a court in Washington state to protect victims of sexual assault from further harm or harassment. It is designed to provide victims with protection from the abuser, both in the immediate and long-term. WISP can be issued in two forms: a Temporary Sexual Assault Protection Order (TAPE) and a Permanent Sexual Assault Protection Order (PIANO). A TAPE is a short-term protection order that can be issued by a court without the abuser's knowledge. It lasts up to 14 days and can be issued ex parte, meaning without the abuser present. During this time, the abuser is prohibited from having any contact with the victim, including physical, verbal, and electronic contact. A PIANO is a long-term protection order that requires the abuser to appear in court and can last up to one year. During this time, the abuser is prohibited from having any contact with the victim, including physical, verbal, and electronic contact. The abuser may also be required to attend counseling and/or treatment, and may be subject to other restrictions. Both TAPE and PIANO orders are enforceable by law and violators can be held accountable in criminal court. Victims can also file a civil lawsuit for damages against the abuser.
