Washington Notification to Local Enforcement Agency (WALES) is a notification process created by the Washington State Department of Ecology to provide advance notice of hazardous waste activities to local fire, police, and public health agencies. WALES is a two-part process. The first part involves any facility generating, treating, storing, or disposing of hazardous waste in Washington State registering with Ecology. The second part involves Ecology issuing a Notification of Compliance with Hazardous Waste Requirements to the facility. This notification includes an inventory of the hazardous materials used at the facility, as well as the emergency contacts and emergency procedures. The facility is then required to provide a copy of the Notification of Compliance to the appropriate local enforcement agency. There are two types of WALES notifications: 1. Initial Notification: This notification is issued when a facility registers with Ecology and begins generating, treating, storing, or disposing of hazardous materials. 2. Annual Notification: This notification is issued each year to remind the facility to update its inventory of hazardous materials and to provide a copy of the notification to the local enforcement agency.
