Washington Safe Ways — Fork Lift Safety is a set of standards and procedures designed to ensure the safe operation of powered industrial trucks, commonly referred to as forklifts, in the state of Washington. The program consists of three components: Operator Certification, Vehicle Maintenance, and Operator Training. Operator Certification is a program that requires operators of powered industrial trucks to be certified by a third party certifying organization such as the International Powered Industrial Truck Federation (IP ITF). Vehicle Maintenance requires regular inspections and maintenance of forklifts to ensure they are in safe working condition. Operator Training requires that operators be trained to operate forklifts safely before they are allowed to use them. Washington Safe Ways — Fork Lift Safety also includes a range of safety guidelines, including proper lifting techniques, safety signs and labels, and safe operating speeds.
