Washington Temporary Licensed Elevator Mechanic is a classification of contractor that specializes in the installation, maintenance, and repair of elevators and other vertical transportation systems. This type of contractor must hold a valid Washington State Department of Labor and Industries (L&I) Temporary License and be certified as an elevator mechanic in the state. There are two types of Washington Temporary Licensed Elevator Mechanics: Journeyman and Apprentice. Journeyman Elevator Mechanics possess at least four years of field experience and have passed the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries elevator exam. Apprentice Elevator Mechanics possess at least two years of field experience and must have completed a state-approved apprenticeship program. Both types of Washington Temporary Licensed Elevator Mechanics are responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing elevators, escalators, and other vertical transportation systems. This includes inspecting, testing, troubleshooting, and repairing the mechanical and electrical components of the systems. They are also responsible for the safe operation of the systems, ensuring that they meet all local, state, and federal codes, regulations, and safety standards.
