Wisconsin Temporary Minor Guardianship (or Temporary Guardian of Minors) is a legal arrangement in which an adult is appointed by the court to temporarily assume guardianship responsibilities for a minor child or children. It is a temporary guardianship arrangement that is often used in cases when a minor's parents are unable or unwilling to care for their child. The Temporary Guardian of Minors is responsible for the physical and emotional care of the child, including providing for their day-to-day needs, arranging for medical care, and making decisions regarding the child’s education and welfare. This arrangement typically lasts for no longer than one year, after which the guardianship must be renewed or the child must be returned to the parents’ care. There are two types of Wisconsin Temporary Minor Guardianship: Formal and Informal. Formal Temporary Minor Guardianship is a court-appointed guardianship, and the Temporary Guardian of Minors has all the rights and responsibilities of a legal guardian. Informal Temporary Minor Guardianship is not a court-appointed guardianship, and the Temporary Guardian of Minors has only those rights and responsibilities specifically assigned to them by the parents.
