The Wisconsin Order of Validation (WON) Risk Assessment is a risk assessment framework designed to support judicial decision-making in child welfare cases. The WON Risk Assessment is based on the best available research on predicting potential risks of maltreatment and is intended to help courts identify the potential risks and protective factors related to a family’s past and current behavior when making decisions regarding the safety and well-being of a child. The WON Risk Assessment is based on the validated Risk Assessment Matrix developed by the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families. There are two types of Wisconsin Order of Validation Risk Assessments: the Adult Risk Assessment (ARA) and the Child Risk Assessment (CRA). The ARA is used to assess the risks posed to a child by their caregiver, while the CRA is used to assess the risks posed to a child by their environment. The WON Risk Assessment takes into account a variety of factors including the family’s history of maltreatment, the level of parental supervision and support, the availability of community resources, and any other relevant factors that may influence the risk of maltreatment. Additionally, the WON Risk Assessment provides guidance for courts to make informed decisions regarding the safety of a child and the best interests of the family.
