The Wisconsin Petition for Involuntary Administration of Psychotropic Medication (With Petition for Protective Services) is a legal document created by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services. This petition is an application for a court order that would allow a mental health or health care provider to administer psychotropic medications, such as anti-depressants, to a person who has been determined to be incompetent to give informed consent. It also allows family members or guardians to provide protective services to the person. The petition can be used in cases where a person has been diagnosed with a mental illness, has been determined to be incompetent to give informed consent, and is at risk of harm to themselves or others. There are two types of Wisconsin Petition for Involuntary Administration of Psychotropic Medication (with Petition for Protective Services): Type A (Involuntary Medication) and Type B (Protective Services). Type A petitions are used when a mental health or health care provider believes that involuntary administration of psychotropic medications is necessary to protect the person or others from harm. Type B petitions are used when family members or guardians believe that they should be authorized to provide protective services, such as placement in a supportive living arrangement, to the person.
