FAQ

Drainage problems in your yard can lead to pooling, mold or water damage in or around your home. Luckily, you can avoid these problems by installing a French drain. A French drain is a trench filled with a perforated pipe and gravel that allows water to drain naturally from your yard.

Wisconsin law requires that a property owner provide advance notice to DNR before construction of any new private well that is not a high capacity well, and advance notice of any heat exchange drillhole construction (geothermal system) that does not require a written DNR approval.

In some cases, the installation of a French drain may require planning permission from your local planning authority, especially if the drain is part of a larger construction project. You should consult your local planning authority for guidance on any necessary permissions and requirements.

Wisconsin well code has prohibited placing wells in basements since 1953. Basement wells are subject to flooding, sewage backup and other sanitary hazards. Outside wells, terminating above ground level, are generally safe from these hazards.

Soil infiltration components, including french drains, are prohibited. NR 811.25(1)(h)3.

The well and pump installation must satisfy the requirements of Chapter NR 812 of the Wisconsin Administrative Code. The well must produce bacteriologically safe water; that is, the water must be free of coliform bacteria including E. coli. The well must not be cross-connected to the municipal water system.

However, the slope of the soil has to be considerable in order for water to slowly drain through it and into the drain basin. Designed for limited use, French drains are not typically good at removing large amounts of water in a short period of time and are often overwhelmed in flooding and high rainfall conditions.

A garage catch basin, floor drain, and trench drain shall be provided with an approved, removable grate of sufficient strength for the anticipated loads. The grate shall have an available inlet area equal to at least the outlet drain for the catch basin, floor drain or trench drain.
