A MARC record is composed of three elements: the record structure, the content designation, and the data content of the record. The record structure is an implementation of the American National Standard for Information Interchange (ANSI/NISO Z39. 2) and its ISO equivalent ISO 2709.

Fields beginning with a 1 are referred to as main entry fields, and there should be only one of them in each MARC record. They contain the name of the person or entity who is primarily responsible for creating the work in the record.
