The IRS will automatically add certain new tax balances to existing Installment Agreements, for individual and out of business taxpayers. This taxpayer-friendly approach will occur instead of defaulting the agreement, which can complicate matters for those trying to pay their taxes.

Individuals may be able to set up a short-term payment plan using the Online Payment Agreement (OPA) application or by calling us at 800-829-1040 (individuals).

You can get your free transcripts immediately online. You can also get them by phone, by mail or by fax within five to 10 days from the time IRS receives your request. To view and print your transcripts online, go to IRS.gov and use the Get Transcript tool.

The IRS does not send confirmation of proof of payment for taxes owed. You should have a cancelled check, bank or credit card statement showing the payment, depending on how you chose to pay the taxes.

You may modify your payment amount or due date by going to IRS.gov/OPA. You may also call 800-829-1040 to modify or terminate your agreement. Generally, the fee is $89 to modify your installment agreement ($43 if you are a low-income taxpayer).

You can access your federal tax account through a secure login at IRS.gov/account. Once in your account, you can view the amount you owe along with details of your balance, view 18 months of payment history, access Get Transcript, and view key information from your current year tax return.
