A footnote or an endnote consists of two parts ? the note reference mark and the corresponding note text.

Basically, footnoted material is of three types: Direct quotations from another author's work. (These must be placed in quotation marks). Citing authority for statements which are not quoted directly. Material of an explanatory nature which does not fit into the flow of the body of the text.

In both MLA and APA, a footnote example includes the citation found at the bottom, or foot, of the page corresponding to the superscript number found in the body of the work. The footnote might consist of the type of work and author's name along with other information related to the type of citation.

Windows PC keyboard shortcuts for footnotes and endnotes are: Alt+Ctrl+F to insert a footnote. Alt+Ctrl+D to insert an endnote.

Footnotes appear at the bottom, or foot, of the page. They begin two double spaces below the text. Footnotes are single spaced, but you must double space between them. If a note continues on the next page, add a solid line across that page two spaces below the text and continue the note two spaces below the line.

If you'd rather have symbols instead of numbers, want the footnotes to appear below the text instead of at the bottom of the page, or want the numbering to start at a different number, you can change this from the "Footnote and Endnote" window. Click Insert and select Footnote.

The footnote usually includes the author's name, publication title, publication information, date of publication, and page number(s) if it is the first time the source is being used. For any additional usage, simply use the author's last name, publication title, and date of publication.

Referencing software, such as Endnote, needs a clear way of sorting and locating the references. You cannot insert a citation into a text box because it is not part of the main body of the text.

First, you should check the obvious formatting-related issues. Are some of your footnotes formatted as Hidden text? If they are and you have Word configured to not print Hidden text, the footnotes will not be visible in Print Preview. You'll also want to check to make sure that Track Changes isn't turned on.

The keyboard shortcut for adding a footnote reference is Command-Option-F; but if you want the citation brackets around the name of the citation within your body text, it looks like you'll need to double-click on the entry in the citations list at any rate.
