Add Footnote Notice For Free

If a footnote or endnote overflows onto the next page, you can create a continuation notice to let readers know that a footnote or endnote is continued on the next page.

On the References tab, click Show Notes. Word will display footnotes in a pane at the bottom of the document window. In the drop down, change "All footnotes" to "Footnote continuation notice" and clear its contents.

There are two types of footnotes used in APA format: content footnotes and copyright footnotes.

For example, say you want to add an interesting comment to a sentence you have written, but the comment is not directly related to the argument of your paragraph.

Using the Notes drop-down list at the top of the Footnotes pane, choose Footnote Continuation Notice. The current notice appears in the window. (Note that the notice might be originally blank, so you might not see anything in the window.) Change the notice as desired.

In both MLA and APA, a footnote example includes the citation found at the bottom, or foot, of the page corresponding to the superscript number found in the body of the work. The footnote might consist of the type of work and author's name along with other information related to the type of citation.
