Adjust Chart Title For Free

Click the chart, and then click the Chart Design tab. Click Add Chart Element > Chart Title, and then click the title option that you want. Type the title in the Chart Title box. To format the title, select the text in the title box, and then on the Home tab, under Font, select the formatting that you want.

The only way to change the size of a chart title is to change the font size. Manual resizing is not possible in chart titles (and never was). If you want more control over the chart title, you can manually insert a text box, which can be sized and formatted as you like.

Move mouse to one of the corners of the chart or to the midpoints of chart borders until the mouse changes to a double headed white arrow, then you can drag the Chart Area to the size you want.

On the right side of the Format ribbon, click Selection Pane. This pops out a menu bar on the right side of the worksheet. This bar lists all the charts on the current sheet. A slow double-click opens the chart name in a textbox, and you can rename it.

Titling the Graph The proper form for a graph title is "y-axis variable vs. x-axis variable." For example, if you were comparing the the amount of fertilizer to how much a plant grew, the amount of fertilizer would be the independent, or x-axis variable and the growth would be the dependent, or y-axis variable.

To easily update a chart or axis title, label, or text box that you have added to a chart, you can link it to a worksheet cell. Changes that you make to the data in that worksheet cell will automatically appear in the chart.
