1 Tap Notification Settings on the notification panel or tap the Settings app. 2 Tap Notifications. 3 Tap App icon badges. 4 Select Show with number.

On your device, navigate to Settings -> Application Manager -> All -> BadgeProvider. Within these preferences, select Force Stop, then Disable. Restart your device and you'll notice that any pre-existing app icon badges are now gone, and no new ones will show up.

You can go to Settings > Notifications > Messages and change the Repeat Alert option to Never. This will stop it from bugging you twice!

Some versions of Android Nougat allow setting a minimum time between notifications, as shown at the bottom of this image. Settings->Notifications->App Notifications-><desired app>->minimum time between notification sounds. Options for times are no time up to 30 minutes between notifications. I hope that helps!
