Kyleigh's Law went into effect in New Jersey on May 1, 2010. Lawmakers named this law for Kyleigh D'Alessio, a New Jersey teen killed in a 2006 car crash. Kyleigh was riding in the car with three other teens when they struck a tree.

It is important to note that under New Jersey's GDL law, teens are required to complete a minimum 12 month provisional (to be called probationary) licensing period. Depending upon the age they begin that period, teens may obtain a basic, non-restricted license as young as age 18 years of age.
