It means an 'altar' or system member who is able to experience a range of ages for instance from age 4 to 9. that is to say they feel and behave those ages even though the biological body they are in has been alive longer than that.

To help you map your system ask yourself, the host, the following questions about each alter: What percentage of time does [alter] come out and occupy the host? Who is [alter] closest too? Who is [alter] most distant from? Who is [alter] aware of? Who does [alter] spend the most time with?

Alters are created for the purpose of survival and coping with trauma. Each alter holds different memories and roles within the system - depending on what the system needs to cope or survive. While some alters are fully aware that they are alters, others (such as the host) may have completely no idea.

It is important to remember that most child alters think, behave, and feel in similar ways as regular children. They may not be able to understand adult topics or complicated words. Communicate with your younger alters as you would any child. Try to use a soft tone and be encouraging.

Alters are considered littles until they present at around 8 years old. After that, many consider them to be middles until they present at around 12 or 13 years old. Teenage alters are considered to be those between 13 and either 18 or 21 years of age. Adult alters, or bigs, are those older than the internal teens.

With a learner's permit, you can operate a motor vehicle when accompanied by a driver 18 years of age or older who is a parent or legal guardian lawfully permitted to operate a motor vehicle, or when accompanied by a driver 21 years of age or older who is lawfully permitted to operate a motor vehicle.
