Changing the formatting and layout of your footnoteSelect the footnote. After typing out the footnote, select it.Go to the top of your screen and click on references. At the bottom of the references column, click on the downward-facing arrow in a box.Make your changes. You can make several changes under this box.

Click the drop-down button to select Footnote Separator. Then click to have the separator in selection. Press either Backspace or Delete to remove the separator. And choose Footnote Continuation Separator then and delete it as well.

Using the Notes drop-down list at the top of the Footnotes window, choose Footnote Separator. Word displays the current separator in the window. Change or delete the separator, as desired. When you are satisfied with the appearance of the separator, close the footnote window.

You can change the Footnote text to a different Font and/or size using its own Style (called Footnote Text), so it's just a matter of locating and modifying the style.

Remove or change a footnote or endnote separator The Footnotes pane appears at the bottom of your document. You can edit the color or style of the separator by choosing options on the Home tab, or, to delete the separators, click Footnote Separator in the Footnotes list, and then select and delete the separator line.

In order to update the cross-references, place your cursor in a footnote and select the text of all footnotes by pressing Ctrl A. Once the footnote text is selected, press F9. A dialogue box will open saying Word cannot undo this action.

Tip: If you add, delete, or move a cross-referenced footnote or endnote, you must update the cross-reference number. Hold down CONTROL , click the cross-reference number, and then click Update Field on the shortcut menu. Word updates cross-references automatically when you print.
